The Life of Matthew Henry, & The Concise
Commentary on the Gospels
Written in 1828 by J. B. Williams
"The summit of my ambition is to assist those who are truly
serious in searching the Scriptures daily." (Matthew Henry)
Although several biographies have been created to chronicle the
miracle of Matthew Henry's work, only one captures the character
of the man. It was written by J. B. Williams in Shrewsbury,
England, and published in 1828. In his biography, we are
introduced to the inner life of Mr. Henry, as revealed in his
personal papers. Charles P. Spurgeon required each of his sons
to read Matthew Henry's full commentary through three times
before he would allow them to marry; that's how much he valued
Henry's insight into the Scriptures.
